Because youth work is ‘not just a job’, those involved simply need always to be prepared to ‘go the extra mile’.


    11.00 – 11.05 Introductory remarks, Sue Atkins.
    11.05 – 11.20 A Turbulent Year: Coordinator’s report, Tony Taylor.

    11.20 – 11.30 This is Youth Work published : Background to the Project, Bernard Davies.

    11.30 – 12.00 Using the Book – two narrations with BD pointing up a number of themes.

    12.00 – 12.45 Discussion, questions and answers in small groups with a view to making proposals to the final afternoon session.

    12.45 – 1.00 Defending Youth Work as Critical Pedagogy, Annette Coburn, Strathclyde.

Lunch, during which DVD of young people talking about youth work will be played.

    1.45 -2.15 The Voluntary and Statutory Sector : Growing Tensions with Rachael McGill [National Council for Independent Action], a speaker from Youth Association South Yorkshire [YASY] and Tania de St Croix [Youth Voice].

    2.15 – 3.00 Discussion in small groups as in the morning with the same objective.

    3.00 – 3.05 Financial report and Steering group nominations.

    3.05 – 3.45/4.00 Where Do We Go From Here : Proposals for Activity.

    Charities are losing out on contracts to get people into jobs through the government’s Work Programme, and vulnerable jobseekers are being sidelined


Conference fee 10 pounds including a copy of the book/DVD. Free for students and the unwaged.

Please bring your own lunch. Tea, coffee, water available free at the venue.
