Young activists on strike!

climate strike
Thanks to

We send our solidarity to school students on strike yesterday, demanding the need for urgent radical action on climate change. Thousands of students walked out of school and demonstrated in 60 towns and cities across the UK. The group’s demands are:

  1. The Government declare a climate emergency and prioritise the protection of life on Earth, taking active steps to achieve climate justice.
  2. The national curriculum is reformed to address the ecological crisis as an educational priority.
  3. The Government communicate the severity of the ecological crisis and the necessity to act now to the general public.
  4. The Government recognise that young people have the biggest stake in our future, by incorporating youth views into policy making and bringing the voting age down to 16.

Beyond the strike on Friday, some students throughout Europe are on strike every Friday, inspired by Swedish 16 year old climate activist Greta Thunberg.

We’re aware that many youth workers don’t feel able to engage in political education… Let us know if you have stories to share from youth work groups who have participated, supported the protests or discussed the strike. And also if you have reflections on why it didn’t feel possible or relevant to your work as a youth worker at this time to get involved. We’d love to share photos, stories, quotes and reflections from young people and youth workers.
